Alright so I went out on a limb for today's beer. At my craft beer store there is a rack of assorted beers that I usually go to for my single bottles. The last time I picked up a six pack of random brews I ended up with this one that I'm not so sure about. The only reason I got it was because of the name: Dixie Blackened Voodoo Lager. Intriguing, right? I thought so.

Well to my surprise when I went to do my homework on this beer and its brewery, I came to find out that it actually isn't functioning anymore. Turns out that Dixie Brewing Company is/was located in New Orleans, and was founded in 1907. I assume that this was a great local brewer... until Hurricane Katrina rolled through. This brewery sustained massive damage due to flooding (and all hell breaking loose) once a nearby levee broke. Kind of a sad story to be honest. The name still lives on through a few beers that are brewed by other companies on behalf of the defunct Dixie brewery.

Anyways this beer is categorized as a 'schwarzbier'. Yea, I had no idea what was either. Ratebeer.com tells me that it is thus: Dark brown to black. Medium body. Roasted malt evident. Low sweetness in aroma and flavor. Low to medium bitterness. Low bitterness from roast malt. Hop flavor and aroma, "noble-type" OK. No fruitiness, esters. Essentially that tells me its going to be dark, but not that dark, and roasted flavors that might not get balanced out by the bitterness or hops. And for the most part that was what I got. This beer isn't bad, but if you see it on the shelf somewhere I wouldn't hold it against you if it didn't make it into your cart.

On a side note I want to thank the people who have been giving me suggestions for beers to try and write about. Keep 'em coming. There will be a few of these featured over the next week or so.
